Data Management
Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN)
MarLIN was established by the Marine Biological
Association of the UK, in collaboration with the JNCC and major
holders and users of marine biological data and information in
Britain and Ireland. MarLIN provides a structure for
linking available data on marine life around Britain and Ireland,
which will provide the marine node to the National Biodiversity
Network (NBN).
As part of the National Biodiversity Network (NBN)
development, JNCC has moved the MNCR data set out of its Advance
Revelation database application into an application compatible with
the NBN known as Marine Recorder. To complement the Recorder 2000
software, a Marine Recorder application to capture marine (benthic)
biological data has been developed. Marine Recorder is fully
compatible with the NBN data model, enabling data to be contributed
to the NBN Gateway. It is the main database used by the
conservation agencies(CCW, EHS, SNH, Natural England (formally
English Nature)) to hold marine monitoring habitat data for Special
Areas of Conservation (SACs).
National Biodiversity Network (NBN)
The NBN is a national project that is building the UK's first
network of biodiversity information. It is used in the same way as
a normal search engine to help find biodiversity information which
has been published on the websites of NBN partners.
Marine Environmental Resource Mapping and Information Database
(MERMAID) - CLOSED
The MERMAID website has closed; the data previously found there
have been significantly updated and are now available from other
online sources with additional functionality. The MNCR survey
data previously contained in MERMAID gave a static picture of
marine survey data held by JNCC in 2000, and therefore did not
present a complete picture of our data holdings. The information
provided by MERMAID is now available in three places: the
NBN Gateway for
species data; the MESH
webGIS for habitat data and other MNCR survey
details; and the JNCC website for the latest
version of the Marine Habitat Classification (www.jncc.gov.uk/marinehabitatclassification).
