Status and Trends
Information is made available on the changes UK Nature is
undergoing and the pressures driving these changes. The information
is accessible in collated form via the UK Nature Barometer or
through links to the major sources of species, habitats and
protected areas monitoring. Links are also made to species
status designations and the sources from which these statuses are
assigned.
UK Nature Barometer
Forecasts changes in the state of
UK Nature by drawing together the results
of biodiversity survey, monitoring, recording and
research.
Condition of Protected Sites
A
UK programme of work, undertaken by the
statutory conservation agencies and co-ordination by JNCC, assesses
the condition of each of the species habitats and geological
features for such protected area have been designated.
Surveillance and Monitoring
Provides information on the methodology and results of JNCC's
monitoring and surveillance
programmes. JNCC is a member of several long term
surveillance partnerships and these are acknolwedged.
Analysis and Trends
Trends in the abundance of species over time are monitored by
a variety of surveillance schemes. Some information on change in
range and changes in frequency with which species are recorded can
also be gleaned from National Recording Schemes. Statistics and
trends from both of these sources are collated in the
Wildlife
Statistics section. There is far less information available on
the status and trends of habitats compared with species.
Species Status designations
There are numerous lists in existence which categorise UK
species in terms of rarity, threats and legal protection. A
collation of species with such statuses, together with information
on the sources from which they are drawn, can be found in the
Species
Designation section (and you can download the list as a
spreadsheet). The ongoing process of assessing
the status of species is also discussed under
Species
Status Assessment programme.
Consultation on the 2nd UK Report on Implementation of the
Habitats Directive
Every six years, Member States of the European Union are
required to
report on the implementation of the Habitats
Directive. As part of this process, the first conservation
status assessments have been completed for all UK species and
habitats listed under the Directive. Consultation on the report
will continue until 28th September 2007.
