Habitat issues

UK terrestrial and freshwater habitats have been subject to great change during the 20th century. Habitat loss has been extensive and the condition of remaining areas has declined due to pressures from, for example, agricultural intensification, atmospheric and other pollution, a decline in traditional management, and urbanisation. Coastal habitats, particularly in the south and east of the country, have been subjected to erosion, due in part to climate change, the threat from which is increasingly being seen as a major concern throughout the natural environment.

JNCC provides advice to government on the environmental impacts of human activities. In particular, we are working with other organisations to assess the effects of climate change, air pollution, pesticides, biotechnology and genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), and to advise on mitigation measures where appropriate.
