When did you start at JNCC? April 2018
What is your role in JNCC? I have a very exciting role here at JNCC, working as a Marine Mapping Scientist within the wider Marine Evidence Team. My work predominantly involves the collation of individual habitat maps from various sources, to create a much bigger picture of what seabed habitats occur, and where. Within my role, I am also a member of the EMODnet Seabed Habitats project, a marine data initiative with aims to facilitate blue growth by providing users with access to free and quality assured data – adopting the philosophy of “collect once, use many times”.
Have you had any other roles at JNCC? When I first joined JNCC, I did so as a Marine Support Officer for the Monitoring and Evidence Team. The flexibility of the role enabled me to apply my skills across many different projects, including the creation of new standardised templates for our offshore survey team to use when collecting data, managing the UK’s benthic database and developing web content for the EMODnet Seabed Habitats portal.
What do you like the most about working at JNCC? Above all else, JNCC is a conveyer belt of positive learning experiences that allow me to develop and grow in the sector I am extremely passionate about. Some experiences challenge me to improve my technical capabilities as a means of problem solving, some experiences allow me to draw on my expertise and demonstrate leadership and other experiences allow me to learn completely new skillsets in new and emerging themes.
What’s been your greatest achievement at JNCC? Without doubt, my greatest achievement has been creating the EUNIS level 3 combined map for the North-East Atlantic region. The sheer size and detail of the dataset is a testament to the amount of effort it took me to produce it. When I look back over this time in my career, I do so with an enormous sense of pride, in my ability to achieve such an incredible feat, but also looking forward at all the benefits it will bring to marine conservation.
