Dispersion Model Selection for AERIUS UK
Invitation to tender: Reference C20-0443-1538
The Inter-agency Air Pollution Group (IAPG), co-ordinated by JNCC, has been working on alignment and streamlining for risk assessment approaches addressing air pollution effects on ecosystems. This is part of wider country-specific work programmes to tackle the way they provide advice, and in some cases regulatory decisions, on new and existing proposals near protected areas. In some cases, this can require detailed modelling of pollutant dispersal to support the risk assessment process.
This project finalises the design of the dispersion model in a UK AERIUS Calculator pilot tool being built as part of the wider ITAPA (Integrating Tools for Air Pollution Assessment) project. The project will also facilitate technical inclusion of the chosen model in the pilot tool. This will ensure the UK AERIUS pilot tool is fit for purpose and more likely to be accepted for use by applicants and UK decision making bodies (e.g. local authorities and regulators) to achieve anticipated savings and streamlining.
This primary purpose of the integrated tool is to assist with risk assessment for decision making on individual plans or projects seeking permission from competent authorities. There may be opportunity to use the initial pilot tool for a wider assessment of multiple sources (e.g. regional dashboard) depending on the model choice. Whilst data generated by the integrated tool will likely contribute to national assessment through providing geographical detail about activity for emission sources, the tool is not expected to replace national modelling tools.
