Positive incentives in place to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable use
Last updated: 2024
The existing set of UK Biodiversity Indicators was specifically developed to enable the UK to report progress against the Aichi targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Aichi targets have since been replaced by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which was agreed by the 15th Conference of the Parties (CoP15) in Montreal in December 2022. The key elements of this are four goals for 2050 and 23 targets for 2030. The GBF is accompanied by a monitoring framework, which includes indicators to measure progress.
The UK Biodiversity Indicators have been reviewed in response to the latest goals and targets agreed under the GBF. The indicators are being adapted, with some new indicators being developed, to better align them with the monitoring framework for the GBF. The suite of biodiversity indicators is therefore expected to change ready for forthcoming UK national reports to CBD in 2026 and 2029.
The intention is for a new indicator to be published on this page. The new indicator will be aligned with the requirements of the GBF monitoring framework, specifically aligned with headline indicator:
18.1 Positive incentives in place to promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, particularly relevant to Target 18.
