We are delighted that JNCC Chair, Dr David Cooper, and Chief Executive, Dr Gemma Harper, have joined the ranks of Fellows of the British Ecological Society.
The British Ecological Society (BES) is the oldest Learned Society for ecology in the world. Their prestigious Fellows are a prized mark of professional excellence in the field of ecology, offered only to those who dedicate their careers to advancing the evolving field of ecology.
Becoming a BES Fellow recognises the contribution of people within the international community who have achieved distinction in research, teaching, or in the application of ecology.
This year’s cohort includes pioneers and leaders. Among the newly elected Fellows are leading voices who are working at the nexus of policy and biodiversity, practitioners, and those empowering the next generation of ecologists.
Dr Gemma Harper said: “I am delighted and humbled to be elected as a Fellow of the British Ecological Society. As a social scientist rather than an ecologist, this recognition feels particularly meaningful. It reflects something I believe deeply – nature recovery and resilience will only be achieved when we bring disciplines together.”

Social science helps us understand the human aspect of nature, what motivates and constrains individuals and groups in societies, and therefore how to change the human systems driving biodiversity loss and ecological collapse. The future of nature recovery lies not in silos, but at the intersections.”
