JNCC responds to the Nature Recovery Green Paper consultation

News Item 2022

Our response to Defra’s consultation on the Nature Recovery Green Paper: Protected Sites and Species, is publicly available via our Resource Hub.

Defra recently consulted on their Nature Recovery Green Paper. This set out initial proposals for the reform of the policy framework for protected sites and protected species in England, together with thoughts on modernising funding and governance arrangements for nature recovery.

As the government adviser on UK and international nature conservation, our response reflects on how the UK’s approach to nature conservation has evolved, particularly over the last forty years, and recognises that there is now a timely opportunity to review current approaches, particularly within the context of climate change impacts and the global biodiversity crisis.

Our response focusses on UK and international considerations for policy reform, and highlights the importance of engaging with governments across the UK to achieve real and lasting benefits at a UK scale as a result of any changes resulting from the implementation of the Green Paper. Care is needed to maintain sufficient consistency across the UK to ensure that a coherent approach to UK nature recovery is in place for the coming years, at this critical time for nature.
