Sri Lanka Marine Protected Area Website Scoping 2025

Abstract

The Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) funded Inbound Hype to deliver a Marine Protected Area (MPA) Website Scoping Report for Sri Lanka.

The study had two key objectives:

  1. Identify whether a centralised Marine Protected Area (MPA) website for Sri Lanka is recognised as a need by the government and other key stakeholders.
  2. Explore how such a website could be developed.

The project’s scope focused on four key components: data collection, market analysis, stakeholder engagement, and technical scoping.

The report recommends building a centralised, authoritative, and adaptive MPA website, led by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and co-managed with other key agencies. With sustained stakeholder engagement, robust data infrastructure, and long-term governance, the platform could serve as a regional model for marine conservation communication, benefitting not only Sri Lanka but neighbouring countries as well.
