Oceans & climate change

Our oceans, seas and coastal environments have an important role to play in helping to reduce the overall impacts of climate change, for example by absorbing and locking up atmospheric carbon and by protecting us against the impacts of storm surges. However, climate change also has an impact our seas, and ultimately the benefits and services our seas provide.

We are working to develop the evidence-base to help support climate-smart decision-making in the marine environment against the backdrop of a changing climate.

Understand the benefits: We are improving our understanding of the ways our oceans, seas and coastal environments help mitigate, and adapt to, the impacts of climate change and the value of this to society.

Evaluate impacts: We are improving our understanding on the ways our oceans, seas and coastal environments are impacted by climate change in terms of the goods and services they provide

Identify management measures: We are identifying and testing approaches to mitigate against the impacts of climate change and considering the costs and benefits of such actions
